West Coast - South Island, New Zealand (Franz Josef Glacier, Wanaka, & Westport) (11/24-27/2009) - Driving the absolutely BEAUTIFUL West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island is a treat!

New Zealand's South Island West Coast is one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand (maybe the world) with azure blue alpine lakes, moss covered forests, green valleys, alpine glaciers, and dramatic rocky coastlines (see photos).

After a day of wine tasting, Wanaka made for a nice stopover. The Puzzling World with its Great Maze, Leaning Clock Tower, crazy Tilted House, and puzzle room makes this a fun place to play (see photo). The funky Cinema Paradiso in Wanaka is a wacky place to see a movie at night. You can sit in a Volzwagon Bug car if you would like to (see photo).

Further north, glaciers form where two giant ocean plates converge to create the Southern Alps mountain range. It seems improbable that you could find glaciers on a South Pacific island and ice in a temperate rainforest - only in surprising New Zealand. Two massive glaciers flow to the valley below where they can be easily accessed. We took a rather wet (slight rain) hike to Fox Glacier.

The next day with great weather, Franz Josef Glacier offered us a chance to take a half-day guided hike up onto and into the cracks of Franz Josef Glacier (see photos). This was an adventure where we donned mountain clothing and champ-on spikes to our climbing boots. Pat was great making much younger folks look bad.

After our glacier hike, we soaked our tired bodies at the Glacier Hot Pools (see photo). Then we spent our first Thanksgiving away from the USA and had a great dinner with new friends from Australia (see photo).

On the final leg of our west coast of South Island drive to Westport, we walked the beautiful rainforest of the Truman Track and visited the famous strange-looking Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowhole of the Paparoa National Park (see photos). Still a mystery why the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks have this form, the strange pancake-like limestone formations where pushed up by seismic action 30 million years ago to form a pretty amazing slight.

In Westport, we stayed in the Trip Inn, originally built in 1863, and sat around a coal-burning hearth at night (see photo).

Milford Sound, New Zealand (11/22/2009) – World famous Milford Sound is a beautiful place, achieving World Heritage status, and makes for an amazing day trip!

We were blessed with absolutely glorious weather (a rare event for Milford Sound in late spring).

From Queenstown, we choose a day trip to Milford Sound with Real Journeys where we took a 5-hour coach ride through one of the best drives in New Zealand, followed by a 2-hour scenic boat trip on Milford Sound, and a 45 minutes awesome flight back.

The sheer magnitude of the landscapes made every minute complete eye candy! The scenery changes from unique New Zealand moss covered forest to rolling green pastures filled with sheep and cows to wild coastline to rocky granite snow-capped mountains to glacier lakes to dramatic and thundering waterfalls and cliff-framed ocean. The coach trip stopped many times to get better views of the amazing landscape and we took walks through the forest.

Our boat trip through Milford Sound brought us by many waterfalls and we have a great view of Mitre Peak (see photo), a 5,560-foot pinnacle.

The 6-person plane flight back from Milford Sound over the snow-capped mountains of New Zealand’s Southern Alps was spectacular! Please see the very rare photo we got of Lake Quill and Sutherland Falls from the air. This photo is becoming one of our most well-known around the world.

We enjoyed the journey to and from Milford Sound as much as viewing Milford Sound itself.

Some information... Milford Sound is actually a 9.3-mile-long fiord in the Southern Alps of New Zealand hemmed by sheer granite cliffs rising up to 4,000 feet. Geologists tell us that huge glaciers formed the amazing landscape but Pat and I like the Maori (original New Zealand people) story better - the demi-god Tu-te-raki-whanoa craved out the fiords.

Queenstown, New Zealand (11/21-23/2009) - We love this FUN beautiful place!

Adrenalin seeking young-thinking people from all around the world converge on the Queentown mountain ski/summer resort for adventure - bunging jumping, hang gliding, skydiving, jet boating, river rafting, luge, biking, trekking, rock climbing, hot-air ballooning, and more including good skiing during the winter.

Kiwis (New Zealanders) are proud of being the birthplace of the first commercial bunging jumping at Kawarau Suspension Bridge (see photo) which affords a 143-foot drop.

Queenstown also has very nice restaurants, cafes, clubs, and shopping - even admirable wine tasting, golfing, boating, and fishing. Queenstown’s setting is stunning built around Lake Wakatipu at the foot of the Remarkables mountain range (see areal photo). The surrounding area is picture perfect beautiful - much of the movie The Lords of the Rings was filmed in this area.

We did the Shotover jet boat (see photo) where you blast full speed through the beautiful narrow rocky Shotover Canyon in as little as 4 inches of water doing 360 degree turns at full speed – great fun! With what adrenalin we had left, we rode the Skyline Gondola to the top of Bob’s Peak and took luge rides down the hill (see photo).

A visit from Queenstown to the famous World Heritage Site, Milford Sound, is a must - see more on Milford Sound in our separate blog post.

We finished our visit to Queenstown with a visit to several local wineries (Chard Farm Vineyard and Gibbston Valley Winery – nice wines!) and to the once thriving gold mining town of Arrowtown. Many of Arrowtown's original buildings remain since when gold was discovered in 1867.
