Mykonos Greek Island, Greece (6/8-13/2009)

Probably our favorite Greek Island so far - been to 8 now.

We were in Mykonos 21 years ago on our honeymoon Greek Island cruise. Like us, a lot has changed in two decades. Instead of one taverna on a beautiful sandy beach, it is now lined with tavernas and beach lounge chairs lined up next to each other.

Still, Mykonos is beautiful with many fine beaches. We had great fun staying at Platys Gialos Beach. Mykonos Town (Chora) is a delight of labyrinth-like cobblestone streets with white houses, wonderful Greek restaurants (tavernas), upscale shops, and slights at every corner.

A visit to Mykonos' waterfront Little Venice quarter, with it's centuries-old windmills and tavernas, is a must.

We hiked over hills to get to world famous Paradise Beach where at 4pm the disco music starts and by 6pm there is dancing on the tables… wild! (see photo). Bars line the sandy beach at Paradise Beach.

We had dinner on the beach at Greek Night that included live Greek music and dancers who we threw plates at… strange but everyone got into it with lots of fun and laughter.

We also walked down our hill to the upscale Psarou Beach that charges 30 euro ($42) for a couple of lounge chairs (we stayed in the cheap seats for 12 euro). On a Greek fishing boat we traveled to Eila and Agrari beaches – absolutely beautiful!

Antiparos Greek Island, Greece (6/7/2009)

Antiparos is lovely small island that can be ‘done’ in a day.

We took a day trip from Paros to the nearby Greek Island of Antiparos.

A swim at nearby Dilpo Beach was a must with temperature of 91. Dilpo Beach is a nude beach so as the saying goes… when in Antiparos, Wayne bared it all. Sorry (or thankfully!), no photos.

We visited the Antiparos cave, which is one of the oldest known caves in the world. As shown on some of our photos, 300-year graffiti can be found on the walls. The cave has 411 stairs to the bottom. Wayne traveled all of them learning that going up is more difficult than going down.

Then it was off to the pretty old town of Antiparos built over 4 centuries ago (see photo). It's a great stop for lunch before the ferry ride back to Paros.

Paros Greek Island, Greece (6/4-8/2009)

Paros is a beautiful Greek Island offering everything you could want from a Greek Island.

We found a wonderful place right on Livadia Beach (Hotel Livadia) next to Paros’ main town (Parikia). Pat loved this place so much I had to convince her to explore the rest of Paros Island.

Leaving Livadia Beach, we rented a car and drove around the Paros (didn’t kill anyone or ourselves - a bit of a feat driving in Greece) visiting Chrissi Akto (Golden) Beach, the amazing rock formations at Kolimbithres Beach (see photo), and partied with the young folks on Santa Maria Beach.

We also discovered the local wines - Greek wines are pretty nice. Pat also had her first beer here ever (really, ever) on Paros (see photo).

We spent the next day at a beach bar on mowed grass at Livadia Beach eating ice cream and had a sunset dinner at the beautiful postcard-perfect fishing village of Naoussa where Greek cafes line the harbor area.

The Greek Islands can be quite sophisticated and Paros is a nice one to visit.

The ferry ride from Naxos was lovely - perfect day for island cruising.

Paros’ long history includes its beautiful translucent white marble highly desired by ancient sculptors. The Venus de Milo was done in marble from Paros.
