Huatulco, Mexico (4/8/09)

Huatulco is a beautiful eco-tourism resort area on the Pacific Ocean with large ecological attention.

There are nine bays of azure water, fine white sand, and natural landscape in Huatulco.

The Spaniard Cortes set up Huatulco, the pirate Drake ransacked it, and now it’s the tourists’ turn. Huatulco is Mexico’s up and coming tourist development - very nice to visit before it gets too developed. We sailed 5 of the 9 bays on a catamaran named Tequila and then played on Santa Cruz beach. OK… another palapa day on a beautiful sandy beach.

The four main parts of Huatulco are Tangolunda, the area where the more upscale resorts are located, Santa Cruz, a small town with more hotels, the marina and Santa Cruz beach, La Crucecita, another small town just inland from the beach area having a more genuine Mexican ambiance, and Chahué, an area between Santa Cruz and Tangolunda. These areas are within a mile or two of each other.

Construction on the Huatulco resort area began in 1983 and virtually all structures were built after that date. The area is known for its beautiful isolated bays separated by rocky hills set against the backdrop of the Sierra Madre del Sur.

An hour out of the Huatulco port, we watched scores of dolphins jump in the ocean from our cruise ship cabin room.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (4/6/09) - A “Palapa day” on a remote beach in Puerto Vallarta on Mexico's Pacific Coast was a great way to unwind and start our 2-year round-the-world world trek helping us to ‘Unhook Now’.

We went to Playa Los Animas (English: Zombie Beach) accessible only by boat. We took a taxi to the end of the road and then a small fishing boat to this Playa Los Animas. Fun day in the sand and ocean with Mexican beer, margaritas, shrimps, and guacamole.

Puerto Vallarta was made famous by John Huston’s movie Night of the Iguana and the romance between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Stretching from the south end of Puerto Vallarta's Old Town to central downtown, a newly extended and refurbished boardwalk lined with sculptures along the ocean, called the Malecon, passes by a number of shops, oceanside restaurants, and hotels, and often plays host to entertainers and artists.

The residents of Puerto Vallarta are very friendly and generally willing to help with directions and other requests. Old Town Vallarta (or the Zona Romantica district) south of the River Cuale is more like a Mexican town and less like a tourist trap. Visit the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and see the Mosaic Tile Park. As a tourist destination, prices are higher than many other places in Mexico.

Puerto Vallarta blends old-world charm with modern luxury offering cobblestone streets, restaurants, and art gallaries. English is widely spoken and U.S. dollars and credits cards are accepted everywhere. Taxis are reasonably priced but do ask the price before getting in.
